Another spectacular start to the 2013 Crocodile Trophy, with 80 riders hitting the always popular Smithfield Trails for a 5 lap cross country dash in Stage 1 of the 9 day race. Australia’s Mark Frendo claimed line honours for the day with an impressive 1h 30 minute to complete his 34km, just over a minute ahead of his nearest rival, Jan Fotik. 3rd place was won by Wolfgang Krenn, with less than half a wheel length back to Cairns own Dominic Hoyal. Jeff Rubach from Townsville showed some strong form here as the next local rider to cross, in 6th place overall.
Stage 2 saw riders take a 92km trek over the ranges behind Cairns and into Tinaroo Dam. Mark Frendo put some authority on this years event taking an amazing 3h 29 minute to complete the course. Jeff Rubach was the best of the local riders with an impressive 3h 46 minutes, which would have placed him 7th Overall, just behind the UK’s Matt Page.
