Happy Holidays – & Take care out there on the Trails this Wet Season

Hi everyone,

As the year winds down and the wet season settles in, we’d like to take a moment to say thank you and celebrate what’s been a huge year for the Cairns MTB community.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of our volunteers, members, partners, and land managers, 2025 has delivered some fantastic wins:

  • Successful trail refurbishment works and maintenance across Smithfield and beyond

  • Announcement and commencement of $15Million of expansion to Smithfield over 3 years – with trail truthing and marking to be commenced over wet-season.
  • Tree planting and environmental projects that will benefit the park for years to come

  • Well-run races and events, Hosting Epic Crankworx events with even more offerings and social rides that showcased our trails and community

  • Huge number of volunteer hours to help achieve events both big and small and the work that goes on behind the scenes of the trails
  • Strong turnouts at working bees and a growing culture of looking after what we ride

We’re incredibly proud of the way our community continues to show up — with tools, shovels, smiles, and stoke — and it’s that involvement that keeps our trails world-class.

We’re also incredibly reflective at this time of year looking back on some huge losses to our tight-knit community.  Losing one of our greats and past president – Frank Fallappi was a shock to everyone.  Frank will always be remembered as one of the greatest & most generous of MTB mates giving so much to the Cairns Community and beyond – we honour him and his service in every volunteer hour we give to our trails.

With the wet season now here, a quick reminder to please ride responsibly, respect trail closures and signage, and report any damage or hazards through the usual channels. These reports help us protect the trails and prioritise work when conditions allow.

From all of us at the Cairns MTB Club, we wish you and your families a safe, relaxing, and Merry Christmas. Thank you for being part of this community — we can’t wait to see what we achieve together in the new year.

See you on the trails,
Cairns MTB Club
