Deep Roots, Bright Future

(Club Initiatives and Partnerships)

Mountain biking in Cairns is a living culture, woven into the land and community. CMBC maintains strong ties with clubs in Mareeba, Atherton, Cassowary Coast and Townsville, building a sustainable, supportive region for all ages and skill levels. Join us in shaping a legacy of world-class trails and unforgettable events.

Club Culture (Jersey)

The jersey promises a “piece of the Cairns Rainforest” – the design evolved directly from the rainforest Cairns MTB Club calls home and was “inspired by Glen Jacobs’ vision of the rainforest ride”.  Our local rainforest flora like stinging tree and wait-a-while vine feature as a reminder of the exhilarating environment in which we ride, that only Cairns riders may fully appreciate.

You too can grab your own piece of Cairns MTB.

A Legacy of Trailblazing

Smithfield is Australia’s birthplace of mountain biking, with roots tracing back to the late 1980s. Trailblazing pioneers like the Mud Cows carved legendary lines through the rainforest, laying the foundation for a culture that would propel Cairns riders onto national and world stages. Formed as the Great Northern Hill Tribe, today’s Cairns Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) continues to nurture MTB fanatics and foster elite cross-country and downhill riders.

  • Early local legends—including the iconic Hannah siblings (“Sik Mik” Michael and Tracey Hannah)—rose from challenging North Queensland terrain to conquer the world, using Smithfield and Kuranda DH as proving grounds.
  • Visionary and innovator Glen Jacobs of MTB Hall of fame notoriety has contributed over many decades to the iconic legacy of the Cairns MTB Club - from founding member of the MTB club to forging many local trails, linking MTB industry, business and attracting events to fostering trail builders around the globe and locally.

International Spotlight

Cairns is the only Australian city to host UCI World Cup Rounds and the legendary World Championships in the 1990s. More recently, CMBC has hosted the World Cup (2014–2016), the World Championships in 2017, and National Series races. Smithfield’s rainforest trails and features—like Jacob’s Ladder and Croc Slide—are globally recognised icons and continue to inspire future generations.

More recently Smithfield Mountain Bike Park has hosted three rounds of Crankworx and two rounds of the UCI Masters Mountain Bike World Championships. All the while the Cairns Club and their neighbours continue to provide great quality club level events along with social rides on a well-established and extensive network of trails. With mountains, lush rainforest and hundreds of km’s of quality single track, the region stands tall as a leading destination for mountain biking in Australia.

Vibrant MTB Community

CMBC remains a volunteer-powered club, created by riders, for riders, with a culture of innovation and grassroots support. The club delivers:

  • World-class events and festivals (including Crankworx Cairns)
